In light of recent events, we have some major apologizing to do. We would first and foremost like to thank you for riding out the storm and being so patient as we try to make this right. We want the focus to be on this important issue right now.
While it has been difficult to monitor the interactions of our VIPeeps and customers outside of our facebook group, it is no excuse for the way we handled a recent situation. Both members involved should have been removed from the group immediately, especially when a minority group was so grossly commented on. We regret not acting on it sooner, and we apologize immensely to our LGBTQIA+ friends, our customers and community. One of the members involved has been misidentified as a brand representative for WildBird. While she was not an ambassador to our company, we did previously collaborate with her in a giveaway. We are regretful that we didn't properly screen this member before agreeing to work with her, and we will be working with our marketing team to better vet those we work with in the future. This member is not representative of what WildBird is all about.
After a long night with our team and discussions with a few qualified professionals, we have decided to do the following. First, we will be partnering with human rights groups and professionals to educate ourselves and continually support and promote diversity and equality through our brand. It is important to us that we take action and clarify where we stand on this important and very relevant matter. There will be more information on this soon. In the meantime, we will be making donations (over $17k donated!) to The Trevor Project (www.thetrevorproject.org) and a donation to the couple who so tragically lost their daughter. We are so sorry that they have been caught in the middle of this while grieving.
As many of you know, up until now we still considered ourselves a small business, but it is clear and obvious that we can no longer treat it as such. We cannot run this company or our Facebook group as a “mom-and-pop” anymore when we have exceeded that size and reach. We will continue to keep the feel and values of a small business, but are taking necessary steps to properly grow our team. We are expanding our social media and marketing team and will be working with a public relations professional to help us better communicate our message with you all. We are also bringing on a diversity and equality consultant to lead us in supporting our minority members to the best of our ability.
We truly appreciate you all and are proud of our community for rallying for what is right. We know that there is no easy fix and that we have to earn back your trust. We are working to become more transparent and accessible to you in a professional manner. We have learned a lot from this experience and are committed to continuing to learn and grow. Thank you all for caring so much—about human issues and our company. Now let’s get to work.
Tayler, Nate and the WildBird Team
